TCM Bank, N.A. Chip Card FAQs
What is a chip card?
A chip card is a credit or debit card embedded with a microchip. This "chip" turns your account information into a one-time unique code when used at a chip-enabled register. This code adds an additional layer of fraud protection to your card.
What's the difference between "Chip" cards, "Smart Chip" cards, and "EMV" cards?
Really, there's no difference at all. Chip cards, Smart Chip cards, and EMV cards are names different companies use for the same security technology. EMV stands for Europay, MasterCard®, and Visa®.
Where can I use my chip card and how do I use it?
You can use your new chip card at millions of places around the world that accept Visa credit cards. If a chip-activated terminal is available, you will be prompted to insert the chip end of your credit card into the terminal with the chip facing up. Leave your card in the terminal and follow the prompts on screen. If you remove your card too soon, your transaction will be canceled. You do not need to enter a pin when using your chip card, but you may be prompted to sign for your purchase. If a merchant does not yet have a chip-activated terminal, you can always swipe your card like you do today.
How does chip technology protect my information?
While your card is in the chip-activated terminal, the embedded chip creates a one-time use code. This code is virtually impossible to counterfeit and helps reduce in-store fraud. It does not track or store your purchase history or provide location assistance if lost or stolen.
Will chip cards prevent all fraud from happening?
As the industry continues to develop new ways to protect consumers, fraudsters continue to look for new ways to commit fraud. Along with the fraud monitoring we currently provide, chip cards provide an additional layer of security when they are used at chip-enabled terminals.
How can I request a chip card?
We will automatically send you a chip card when your current card expires or is lost or stolen. If you would like to receive your chip card before your current card expiration date, you can request one by calling 1-800-883-0131.
What should I do with my old Visa® credit card?
Once you activate your new chip card, please cut up and destroy your existing card for security reasons.
Will my PIN change once I receive my chip card?
Yes. Each EMV card has its own chip and each chip has a unique PIN embedded in it. This PIN number will not be able to be changed.
Will I have to pay any fees to use my chip card?
No. Your chip card is free and there are no additional fees to use your new card.
Does my new chip card have all the same benefits?
Yes. You can count on the same level of benefits you always have.
